The Blending of Music and GamesPosted by Soulskill on Tuesday October 07, @07:07PMfrom the i-just-five-starred-halo dept.Music GamesGamasutra has an opinion piece by the 'father of music games,' Masaya Matsuura, who questions the evolution of video game music (or the lack thereof) as the industry's technological advancements give rise to the capability for greater complexity. "Most games these days seem to use gorgeous orchestral soundtracks. While these large-scale soundtracks may generally be lovely to listen to, if we really think about it, isn't it all a bit lacking in imagination? Thinking about it from a simplistic visual perspective, while films are basically just watched, games are interactive." He also discusses the predilection for games to encourage "competitive fun," as opposed to "cooperative fun." GameSetWatch has a related article which talks about how excellent musical scores can help to create an emotionally charged experience, rather than simply occupying one's mind for a time.top tags * userinterface o x o ! * music o x o ! * games o x o ! * story o x o ! * lovestory o x o !system tags * games o x o ! * music o x o !type tag * story o x o !Slashdot | The Blending of Music and Games

backchannel interactive haul
Viacom is nipping on the social networking backchannel which is a functional stay our cross media sim approach, but the Hills property is such crap content (but the commerce play will work for the snarky at heart) and watching kids (re)mash just seems a HP product placement ops. Although shrewd mktg, it's a stretch as topical narrative TV, but who knows mashup camps and tools are the rage and I do love my Backbase and JackBe

Intergalactic
I was thinking about the sound again today of the Beastie Boys accompanying my www.galacticsimulation.com work and discussions with many, few, and far between and wondering how its going to turn out. Thinking about the Overview Effect, remote viewing and some of the neuroscience visualization I've been interested in. Today stumbling onto Andy Clark today, on which started with my medical simulation consulting and interests in applied fMRI visualizations and serious simulated games and cross media entertainment (XME. As someone said to me the other day, 'you don't (me) give your energy to the ideas, they take it from you'; ..both positive and negative certainly...as I often see days move by in blinks of seconds rather than hours.

Finally some very innovative augmented reality on mobile. There have been others, but this stands due to the 'live' work. I'm sure this will be much improved.

Past present future
Tonight is Yuri Night party's across the world and in some virtual worlds such as SecondLife.
While searching the London events, this sites 1907 Paris black and white film on the lower left, by one the London party hosts ... resonates with how I view where we are now, and at the same time how close and fast we will progress to the uncanny valley with regard to simulation.
This and other similar, organizations of students for the exporation and development of space (SEDS) should proved to be instrumental.

Air safety
NASA FINDINGS summary
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7166715.stm
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7166715.stm
- Data gathered over four years, 16K pages, released 31 Dec 2007
- 1,266 incidents in which aircraft flew within 152m (500ft) of each other
- 1,312 cases of pilots suddenly dropping or climbing more than 90m
- 166 reports of pilots landing without clearance at an airport
I can somewhat understand the issues related to 3. and 4. and maybe how 3. may have helped avoid 2.
However, with 2. seems to cast a reckless and a bit of an indifferent light onto the NASA chiefs attitude. Contrasting 'harm to commercial interests' and with his comment "It's hard for me to see any data here that the travelling public would care about or ought to care about." ... leads me to an uneasy relfection upon Trento's excellent book "Prescription for Disaster: From the Glory of Apollo to the Betrayal of the Shuttle". Maybe safety lessons haven't been learned?
